Highlights
Volcanoes National Park
Discover the striking Rwandan section of the Virungas Mountain Range. The luscious green Virungas comprises five volcanoes, and is among the most spectacular national parks in Africa. A true highlight of the park is the famous Mountain Gorilla, the peaks an optimum spot for a clear sighting. Find yourself just a few metres from a stately Silverback, or observe a group of young primates at play – these are experiences that will last a lifetime. Gorilla treks may last up to five hours (with a strictly limited period of one hour actually observing the gorillas) and are suitable for visitors aged fifteen years old and above. Please note that the terrain may be strenuous and muddy underfoot, and that permits to see the Mountain Gorillas are limited. Note: gorilla-viewing permits cost from $1,500 (US) per person and are in high demand. We recommend booking well in advance.
Wildlife
Although the magnificent gorillas steal the show, they also share the Volcanoes National Park with the charming, cheeky and rare Golden Monkey - again a permit is required in advance. Further local attractions include guided birding and nature walks, meeting with experts, tea and coffee tastings, plus enriching community village visits.
Lake Kivu
One of Africa’s Great Lakes, Lake Kivu, lies on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is a spectacular sight to behold. Approximately 90 km (56 miles) long and 50 km (31 miles) at its widest, this vast stretch of fresh water is a beautiful glistening oasis, perfect for budding photographers to capture the magnificent landscape that surrounds it. Don’t forget to pack your swimming gear as you can swim in crystalline waters or explore deserted islands on a pirogue.
